The study compared the efficacy of human amniotic membrane (hAM) dressings and conventional silver sulfadiazine (SSDZ) ointment in managing second-degree burn wounds. Fifty patients with thermal injuries were randomly assigned to either the hAM (n = 25) or SSDZ (n = 25) group. Clinical assessments on days 7, 14, and 30 revealed significantly improved wound epithelialization, reduced scar formation, decreased pain severity, and shorter hospital stays in the hAM group (p < 0.05). However, treatment costs were notably higher for hAM ($170) compared to SSDZ ($71) (p < 0.001). These findings suggest that while hAM dressings incur greater expenses, they offer superior benefits in wound healing and pain management for second-degree burns.
