Head and neck solitary fibrous tumors: A review of the National Cancer Database

This study focused on head and neck solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs), which are rare neoplasms, and aimed to evaluate the demographics and survival correlates in a large series of SFT patients. The study analyzed data from the 2004-2017 National Cancer Database and identified 135 patients who underwent definitive surgery for head and neck SFTs. The study found that sinonasal and orbital SFTs were the most common subtypes. The majority of SFTs (93%) were invasive, and 64% were classified as hemangiopericytomas. The 5-year overall survival (OS) rates varied depending on the anatomical origin, with skull base SFTs having lower survival rates compared to sinonasal and orbital SFTs. Patients with government insurance had higher mortality rates and lower OS. The study concluded that head and neck SFTs have distinct prognoses based on their anatomical origin, and skull base SFTs and government insurance are associated with worse survival outcomes. Hemangiopericytomas did not show significant differences in prognosis compared to other SFTs.
