Health Anxiety Common in Temporomandibular Disorders Patients

The prevalence of health anxiety (HA) in patients with Temporomandibular Disorders (TMDs) was investigated using the Whiteley Index (WI-8) scale. Among 329 TMD patients, 18.54% experienced HA. Patients with HA showed higher pain scores (VAS), functional limitations (JFLS-8), and elevated anxiety and depression levels (GAD-7, PHQ-9), as well as lower maximum mouth opening. HA was correlated with increased subjective pain and functional limitations rather than structural changes in the temporomandibular joint. These findings suggest HA's significant role in pain perception in TMD patients.
