Hearing Loss in Bacterial Meningitis Revisited—Evolution and Recovery

The study discusses the occurrence and development of hearing loss in adults with bacterial meningitis, which can result in social dysfunction and learning difficulties. The study used otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) to measure hearing loss in patients with ABM, comparing the results with healthy controls. The study found that hearing loss affected more than 60% of patients despite treatment with dexamethasone, with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) being profound and permanent in patients with S. pneumoniae meningitis. The study proposes a window of opportunity for systemic or local treatments to preserve cochlear function in patients with ABM.
