The study evaluated the hospital performance measures for heart failure hospitalization using the risk-standardized readmission rate and risk-standardized mortality rate. These measures are often driven by care quality and outcomes for the majority racial and ethnic group and may not adequately represent hospital performance for patients of Black and other races. The study found that using a race-specific approach to measure hospital performance led to better representation for Black patients. The race-specific metrics demonstrated a stronger correlation and concordance in hospital performance for all patients and patients of Black race. The study suggests that using race-specific measures can lead to more equitable representation of hospital performance for patients of all race groups.
