Heart transplantation: advances in expanding the donor pool and xenotransplantation

Heart failure affects approximately 65 million adults worldwide, and its prevalence is expected to rise due to ageing populations. While pharmacological and device therapies have advanced, long-term morbidity and mortality rates remain high. Heart transplantation is the gold-standard treatment. However, there is a significant shortage of organs available for transplantation. New strategies are being explored to address the shortage of organs, such as utilizing organs from donors infected with hepatitis C, HIV, or SARS-CoV-2. Other approaches include opt-out donation policies, organ donation after circulatory death, and xenotransplantation.
