This study compared two flat side single-file rotary instruments with three single-file reciprocating systems. The instruments were evaluated for their design, mechanical performance, and phase transformation temperatures. Results showed that the flat side rotary instruments had inconsistencies in their design and underperformed the reciprocating instruments in cyclic fatigue, maximum torque, angle of rotation, maximum buckling strength, and flexibility. Some flat side instruments also had manufacturing inconsistencies. The study concludes that the reciprocating instruments are superior to the flat side rotary instruments in terms of performance and design.
