High ADL Limitations Found in SLE Patients Linked to Disease Activity

A study examining limitations in activities of daily living (ADLs) among systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients identified a high prevalence of functional challenges, particularly with instrumental ADLs (IADLs) like housekeeping (50.7%) and shopping (33.0%), and basic ADLs (BADLs) such as bathing (25.3%) and dressing (24.4%). Among 436 participants (mean age 46.2 years, predominantly Black and female), 56.2% reported IADL limitations and 43.8% BADL limitations. Higher disease activity was strongly associated with IADL and BADL limitations (aOR 6.49 and 7.35, respectively). Additional correlates included depression, perceived stress, older age, and lower socioeconomic status. These findings underscore the need for targeted interventions to maintain independence and enhance the quality of life in the SLE population, particularly as they age.
