High Maternal BMI Linked to Early Childhood Brain Changes and Lower Cognitive Scores

Children exposed to high pregestational BMI (≥25 kg/m²) show altered brain white matter development—particularly in the corpus callosum—alongside lower cognitive performance. A study using diffusion tensor imaging also revealed sex-specific effects, with boys and girls showing different white matter patterns. Findings highlight the importance of healthy maternal weight before pregnancy.
