High-Sensitivity Cardiac Troponin for Risk Assessment in Patients With Chronic Coronary Artery Disease

Cardiac troponin, often used for acute coronary syndrome risk assessment, was studied in chronic coronary artery disease. In a cohort of 4,240 patients with stable angina symptoms, troponin levels were measured before angiography. Those with higher troponin had doubled risk for myocardial infarction or cardiovascular death over 2.4 years, even when accounting for risk factors and disease severity. A troponin level >10 ng/L indicated 50% higher risk. The study suggests troponin could independently predict such events in chronic coronary disease, potentially aiding treatment decisions for high-risk patients.
