How Does Oxymetazoline Change Nasal Aerodynamics and Symptomatology in Patients with Turbinate Hypertrophy?

A new study reveals that the nasal decongestant oxymetazoline improves nasal obstruction symptoms by targeting specific airflow properties near the head of the inferior turbinate. The study used Computational Fluid Dynamic modeling on 13 patients with chronic nasal obstruction. Results showed significant symptom improvement after oxymetazoline use but not after sham treatment. Oxymetazoline was found to affect the entire nasal passage, but the key factors for symptom relief were reduced nasal resistance, increased regional airflow, mucosal cooling, and Wall Shear Stress near the head of the inferior turbinate. This study may guide future surgical interventions for nasal obstruction.
