HPV E6/E7 mRNA Assay Effective for Cervical Cancer Screening

The study evaluated the efficacy of HPV E6/E7 mRNA testing (Aptima® HPV) for cervical cancer screening, focusing on menopausal status. Among 16,917 women, AHPV demonstrated significantly higher sensitivity (91.2%) and negative predictive value (NPV; 96.6%) compared to liquid-based cytology (LBC; 33.2% sensitivity, 84.7% NPV). The co-testing strategy (cytology plus AHPV) showed slightly higher sensitivity (93.6%) but similar specificity (61.3%) and NPV (97.5%) compared to AHPV alone. Premenopausal women had higher sensitivity (93.5%) and NPV (97.3%) with AHPV than menopausal women (77.7% sensitivity, 93.9% NPV). Based on these findings, HPV E6/E7 mRNA testing is recommended as a cost-effective screening method for cervical cancer, particularly in premenopausal women in China.
