Hyaluronidase Outperforms Dexamethasone in Reducing Postoperative Edema and Trismus

A study involving 60 patients assessed the effects of 8 mg of dexamethasone and 150 IU of hyaluronidase on postoperative recovery following impacted tooth removal. Hyaluronidase significantly reduced edema compared to dexamethasone on all postoperative days (P < 0.05). It was also more effective in decreasing trismus on the 2nd and 3rd days (P < 0.05). Both agents showed similar outcomes in pain management, measured by VAS scores and analgesic use, and neither increased postoperative infection rates. Hyaluronidase is recommended for minimizing edema and trismus, while dexamethasone may be preferred for cost-effective pain control.
