Hydrofluorocarbons, Climate, and Health — Moving the Montreal Protocol beyond Ozone-Layer Recovery

In 1974, scientists Sherwood Rowland and Mario Molina warned that the use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) would harm the ozone layer. Their predictions were proven correct when a hole in the Antarctic ozone layer appeared in the 1980s. Prompted by environmental leaders like Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan, the Montreal Protocol was signed in 1987 to address the issue. As over 99% of CFCs have been phased out, the ozone layer is gradually recovering and is expected to fully recover by 2066.
