
A recent study suggests that autoantibodies and T cells directed against Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) nuclear antigen 1 (EBNA1) may play a role in the development of multiple sclerosis (MS) by targeting the heat shock protein α-crystallin B (CRYAB). The researchers discovered cross-reactive antibodies against EBNA1 and CRYAB in plasma samples from MS patients. Additionally, mice immunized with recombinant CRYAB or an EBNA1 peptide produced T cells that recognized both proteins, and similar cross-reactive T cells were detected in individuals with MS. These findings provide insights into the strong correlation between EBV infection and MS, shedding light on the potential mechanisms underlying the disease.
