IL-6 Proves Superior in Predicting Septic Shock After Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy

A study compared the predictive value of Quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (qSOFA), Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS), National Early Warning Score (NEWS), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and procalcitonin (PCT) for septicemia. Among 401 patients undergoing percutaneous nephrolithotomy, 16 (3.99%) developed septic shock. IL-6 demonstrated superior predictive accuracy (AUC 0.993) compared to qSOFA, SIRS, and NEWS. Independent risk factors for septic shock included PCT, IL-6, SIRS, NEWS, qSOFA, and surgical time. Females, elderly individuals, and patients with positive urine culture and nitrite were more susceptible.
