Childhood caries affects a majority of children, causing dental issues and substantial societal costs. This study, utilizing mass spectrometry, identified ten Streptococcus mutans proteins targeted by antibodies in children, regardless of caries presence. Saliva from caries-free individuals hindered S. mutans adherence to teeth, suggesting a crucial role in preventing caries. These insights into the immune system's interaction with S. mutans proteins inform potential strategies for preventing childhood caries.
