The impact of blood lactic acid levels was investigated in a study exploring retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in premature infants. Infants with severe ROP (BW ≤ 1500 g, GA ≤ 32 weeks) were compared with controls. Elevated blood lactic acid levels were consistently observed in the ROP group on days 1, 3, 5, and 7 post-birth. Day 5 levels emerged as an independent risk factor for ROP. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis revealed day five as optimal for sensitivity and specificity. These findings imply a potential link between early blood lactic acid levels and ROP development in very preterm infants.
