Bronchoscopic thermal vapor ablation (BTVA) shows promise in improving lung function and quality of life for emphysema patients. A meta-analysis of four trials involving 112 patients revealed significant enhancements in forced expiratory volume, lung capacity, walking distance, and respiratory questionnaire scores after 6 months of BTVA treatment. However, the benefits were more pronounced at 3 months compared to 6 months. Adverse effects included increased risk of COPD exacerbations and pneumonia at 6 months. The study highlights the short-term effectiveness of BTVA for upper lobe emphysema, emphasizing the need for long-term research to assess its lasting impact.
