The fear of weight gain deters women from using hormonal contraception or menopausal hormone therapy. Resting energy expenditure, a key factor in total energy use, greatly affects weight gain. Lower energy expenditure leads to weight gain and obesity. The study on sex steroids' impact on energy expenditure, especially estrogen, is crucial. A review analyzed 10 studies on estrogen's effects on resting energy expenditure in healthy women. Results show estrogen increases energy expenditure by +208 kcal/day for contraception and +222 kcal/day for menopausal therapy. This suggests circulating estrogen and administration could prevent weight gain and obesity.
