Impact of ferric carboxymaltose for iron deficiency at discharge after heart failure hospitalization

The article discusses the use of ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) to treat iron deficiency (ID) in patients with heart failure (HF) and its impact on disease burden and pharmacoeconomic implications in France, Germany, Poland, Spain, and Sweden. The study uses data from the AFFIRM-AHF trial and estimates the reduction in disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and hospitalization episodes and bed days. The study finds that FCM is predicted to result in substantial annual savings in bed days and be cost-effective in all countries, resulting in net savings to healthcare budgets within one year. Overall, the study highlights the potential benefits of FCM therapy in reducing the burden of disease and recommends the implementation of ESC HF guideline recommendations regarding ID treatment.
