Impact of sex and aging on radiographic and functional parameters of the anal sphincter complex in patients with accidental bowel leakage

The study aimed to determine if the thickness of the anal sphincter complex on endoanal ultrasound correlated with function in women and men with accidental bowel leakage (ABL) and if women demonstrated age-related anal sphincter thinning. Consecutive patients with ABL were included in the study, and their clinical data were obtained from medical records. Results showed that women with ABL had thinner and weaker anal sphincters than men, even in nulliparous women. In addition, ageing correlated with increased anal sphincter thickness, but an endoanal ultrasound did not demonstrate this association well.
