Impaired mobility and MRI markers of vascular brain injury

A study revealed that vascular brain injury (VBI) may contribute to under-recognized mobility impairment. Analyzing two large study cohorts, researchers found associations between MRI VBI biomarkers and impaired mobility in stroke-free participants. In the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) cohort (mean age 76.2), imbalance correlated with multiple VBI measures, notably white matter hyperintensity (WMH). Slow walking was associated with various VBI measures, with WMH showing the most vital link. The findings suggest that VBI's impact on mobility extends beyond clinical stroke.
