Implications of updated staging system for p16+ oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma: Is valuable prognostic information being omitted?

The study examined the impact of the updated nodal staging system on the prognosis of p16+ oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC). Findings showed that in both the clinical and pathologic cohorts, patients with multiple positive lymph nodes, ECE, or nodal size exceeding 6 cm had significantly lower 5-year OS rates. The study concludes that the simplifications in the current staging system led to a loss of prognostic information in nodal staging for p16+ OPSCC.
