A groundbreaking study has revealed that prisoners in India are five times more likely to contract tuberculosis (TB) compared to the general population. The study found that there are 1,076 cases of TB per 100,000 prisoners in Indian prisons, while the incidence in the general population is 210 cases per 100,000 people. The high incidence of TB in prisons is attributed to overcrowding and poor ventilation. Experts recommend conducting regular health screenings and improving diagnostic and treatment services in prisons. Globally, 125,105 prisoners out of 11 million developed TB in 2019, with a case detection rate of just 53%.
