
This study compared the incidence, patient characteristics, risk factors, and outcomes of in-hospital diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in patients with COVID-19, influenza, and pre-pandemic data. The study found that the incidence of DKA was higher in COVID-19 patients compared to influenza and pre-pandemic patients. COVID-19 patients with DKA experienced worse acute outcomes and had a higher incidence of new insulin treatment post-infection. Type 1 diabetes, steroid therapy for COVID-19, COVID-19 status, black race, and male gender were associated with an increased risk of DKA. Timely intervention and monitoring are essential to manage DKA and insulin dependency in COVID-19 patients.
