Increased Risk of Hypocalcemia with Decreased Kidney Function in Patients Prescribed Bisphosphonates

In a recent study examining the safety of bisphosphonate preparations (BPs) in patients with decreased kidney function, post-marketing cases of hypocalcemia were identified despite package insert warnings against BP use in such patients in Japan. A cohort study included 14,551 osteoporosis patients newly prescribed BPs. Results indicated an increased risk of hypocalcemia correlated with decreasing kidney function severity. This evidence led to revisions in the package insert, emphasizing the hypocalcemia risk and kidney function relationship to enhance BP's proper clinical use.
