Islet transplantation can treat patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). However, issues with low supplies of donor tissue and the complications of long-term immunosuppression have driven research into developing alternative sources of islets. A new study published in Nature Medicine has assessed the use of islets derived from human chemically induced pluripotent stem cells (hCiPSC-islets) in non-human primates, demonstrating the efficacy of this approach.
