Incretin Discovery Transformed Diabetes Care Through Gut–Pancreas Link

Gut–pancreas research revolutionized type 2 diabetes treatment. The concept of gut-derived insulin enhancers, or "incretins," was first proposed in 1929 but remained unproven due to limited tools. The 1950s radioimmunoassay breakthrough enabled insulin measurement, and a 1964 study confirmed the gut’s role in glycaemic control. This led to the discovery of GLP1 and GIP, and eventually, modern incretin-based therapies for type 2 diabetes mellitus.
