The study investigated the role of cellular senescence in giant cell arteritis (GCA), a condition affecting individuals over 50 years old. It examined the presence of senescence-related markers, p21 and p16, and proinflammatory molecules, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), in temporal artery biopsies (TABs) of GCA patients. The results showed elevated p16, p21, IL-6, and GM-CSF expression levels in GCA TABs, mainly near the internal lamina elastica and among giant cells and macrophages. The study suggests the presence of activated senescence pathways in the inflamed vascular site of GCA and supports further research on the role of senescence in GCA's pathophysiology.
