Improving Global Outcomes reported the term CKD-MBD two decades ago to describe the mineral and bone disorders in CKD patients. This complication leads to fractures, cardiovascular issues, and premature mortality. Traditional therapies targeting phosphate retention, vitamin D metabolism, and parathyroid hormones have fallen short, prompting the need for innovative approaches. Gut dysbiosis and compromised barrier functions could contribute to CKD's inflammatory state and CKD-MBD. The fields of osteoimmunology and osteomicrobiology open new avenues for potential treatments.
