
This study examined the impact of specific genetic variations in serotonin-related genes on oropharynx carcinoma (OPC), a type of throat cancer. The study investigated single-nucleotide variations (SNVs) in three genes involved in serotonin regulation: TPH1, TPH2, and HTR1D. They analyzed DNA samples from 251 OPC patients and 254 controls using RT-PCR and conducted luciferase assays to study the transcriptional activity of the SNVs. The results revealed that the TPH1 TT genotype was more prevalent in OPC patients than in controls, and patients with HTR1D GG/GA genotypes exhibited invasive tumors and shorter survival. Additionally, lower transcriptional activity was observed in TPH1 TT and HTR1D GG genotypes. These findings suggest that genetic variations in serotonin-modulating genes can influence OPC.
