Innovative Flap Reconstruction for Tongue Cancer Defects

Innovative Flap Reconstruction for Tongue Cancer Defects

A prospective pilot study evaluated a chimeric innervated vastus lateralis muscle and anterolateral thigh fasciocutaneous flap for tongue reconstruction after subtotal/total glossectomy. While complications were minimal, speech intelligibility improved significantly in the intervention group. However, swallowing outcomes and quality-of-life measures still require optimization. The findings support the safety of this technique but highlight the need for refinement to enhance functional recovery and patient satisfaction.
