In a recent study, researchers aimed to enhance the efficacy and user-friendliness of radiation shielding during cardiac catheterization. The study introduced a novel flexible multiconfiguration x-ray shield (FMX) with 0.5-mm Pb equivalent, selectively configurable to accommodate variations in patient morphology, access site, and procedure type while ensuring maintained visualization, vascular access, and shielding. Results from 103 consecutive procedures showed an 84.4% reduction in median relative operator dose with FMX compared to routine setups. Positive user feedback, indicating a 99% approval rate, highlights FMX as a promising solution for routine cardiac catheterization radiation protection.
