
High-density lipoprotein (HDL), which has a role in cholesterol homeostasis and might also have anti-inflammatory properties, is mostly synthesized in the liver. However, some HDL is produced in the intestine. A new study published in Science shows that intestinal HDL can reach the liver via the portal vein and protect it from lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced injury.
