The study compared the challenges, complications, and operation time of illuminated chopper-assisted cataract surgery in eyes with diabetic retinopathy undergoing either cataract surgery only or phacovitrectomy. A total of 295 eyes were reviewed, with 211 undergoing cataract surgery only and 84 undergoing phacovitrectomy. Intraoperative challenges like small pupil, miosis, or poor red reflex occurred more frequently in the phacovitrectomy group. The use of an illuminated chopper showed potential benefits in reducing the need for supplemental devices, operation time, and posterior capsule rupture in diabetic cataract surgery, especially during phacovitrectomy.
