Intraoperative Wound Irrigation for the Prevention of Surgical Site Infection After Laparotomy

A recent study on preventing surgical site infections (SSIs) after open abdominal surgery found that intraoperative wound irrigation with polyhexanide solution did not significantly reduce SSI incidence compared to saline or no irrigation. The study involved 689 patients randomized into three groups: polyhexanide, saline, and no irrigation. The overall SSI incidence was 11.8%, with no statistically significant difference between the groups. These findings suggest that the use of polyhexanide for wound irrigation may not be more effective than saline or no irrigation in reducing SSIs in clean-contaminated surgeries. Further research is needed to assess its efficacy in other types of procedures.
