
A prospective clinical study evaluated the efficacy and drawbacks of iodine-coated titanium implants in reducing surgical site infections (SSI) following orthopedic implantation. Iodine-supported implants were used in 477 patients for infection prevention and in 176 patients for active infection treatment. The overall failure rate was 26.3%, with mechanical failures accounting for 101 cases and non-mechanical causes for 71 cases. The overall infection rate was 6.8%, with a lower rate observed in prevention cases (3.7%) than in treatment cases (15.3%). The study concluded that iodine-coated implants effectively reduce postoperative infections, particularly in spinal cases requiring one-stage revision surgery.
