Is There a Causal Relationship Between Physical Activity and Bone Microarchitecture? A Study of Adult Female Twin Pairs

This study aimed to explore the relationship between physical activity (PA) and bone microarchitecture traits in adult females. The researchers conducted a cross-sectional study involving twin pairs and used high-resolution-peripheral quantitative computed tomography to assess bone microarchitecture. They found that within individuals, PA was positively associated with distal tibia cortical cross-sectional area and thickness, trabecular volumetric bone mineral density, and trabecular thickness, while it was negatively associated with porosity and medullary cross-sectional area. The researchers also analyzed cross-pair cross-trait associations and found that the associations weakened after adjusting for within-individual associations. These findings suggest that increasing PA may have a causal effect on improved bone microarchitecture in adult females, independent of shared familial factors.
