Obese and non-obese asthma patients exhibit distinct patterns of viral and bacterial infections, impacting exacerbation risks. A study involving 407 patients from 24 medical centers in Korea revealed that 50.4% experienced viral and/or bacterial infections during exacerbations. Streptococcus pneumoniae was the most common bacterium, with obese patients showing a lower incidence of Chlamydia pneumoniae infection. In non-obese individuals, bacterial infections, particularly Chlamydia pneumoniae, were linked to prolonged systemic corticosteroid use. This research underscores the nuanced relationship between infection types and asthma exacerbations, emphasizing the importance of personalized approaches in asthma management.
