Ketogenic diet acutely improves gas exchange and sleep apnoea in obesity hypoventilation syndrome: A non‐randomized crossover study

The study investigated the effects of a ketogenic diet on hypercapnia (excessive carbon dioxide levels) in patients with obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS). Results showed that the ketogenic diet significantly increased blood ketone levels, reduced venous CO2 and bicarbonate levels, and resulted in weight loss. Improvements were observed in sleep apnea severity and nocturnal oxygen levels. Additionally, the diet reduced respiratory quotient, fat mass, body water, glucose, insulin, triglycerides, leptin, and insulin-like growth factor 1. However, when participants resumed a regular diet, rebound hypercapnia occurred. The study suggests that a ketogenic diet could be beneficial for controlling hypercapnia and sleep apnea in individuals with OHS.
