KIDS SAVE LIVES: Basic Life Support Education for Schoolchildren: A Narrative Review and Scientific Statement From the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation

Teaching basic life support (BLS) to schoolchildren has become an important initiative to improve bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation rates. This study aimed to identify the best practices for providing BLS training to schoolchildren by reviewing existing literature. The research found that schoolchildren are highly motivated to learn BLS, and the CHECK-CALL-COMPRESS algorithm is recommended for all age groups. Regular training in BLS helps to maintain long-term skills. Children as young as 4 years old can learn the initial steps in the chain of survival, while older children can achieve effective chest compressions and ventilation. A combination of theoretical and practical training, with schoolteachers as instructors, is recommended. Schoolchildren can also pass on BLS skills to others, and age-appropriate social media tools can be utilized for teaching. This training has the potential to educate generations and improve survival rates after cardiac arrest.
