Less Sodium, More Potassium, or Both: Population-wide Strategies to Prevent Hypertension

Less Sodium, More Potassium, or Both: Population-wide Strategies to Prevent Hypertension

Hypertension is a global health issue linked to chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular problems, and mortality. Preventive measures, particularly non-pharmacological interventions at a population level, are crucial to combat this epidemic. The Salt Substitute and Stroke Study recently showcased the effectiveness of replacing table salt with potassium salt in reducing the risk of stroke, major cardiovascular events, and death. However, this finding triggered a debate on whether sodium or potassium should take priority in countries where salt substitution is less feasible. This review highlights arguments supporting both strategies: reducing sodium intake and increasing potassium consumption. It emphasizes the importance of cultural context in formulating evidence-based policies to address high blood pressure on a population-wide scale.
