Life Expectancy After Diagnosis of a Vestibular Schwannoma in Patients 70 Years and Older

A retrospective cohort study in Denmark spanning four decades reveals critical insights into vestibular schwannoma (VS) treatment among patients aged 70 and above. The study analyzed 624 patients diagnosed with VS between 1976 and 2016 and compared survival rates post-diagnosis with age-matched counterparts. The study, encompassing surgical and conservative treatment approaches, discerns that older adults receiving surgical intervention exhibited a comparable lifespan to the general population. Conversely, those under the "wait-and-scan" approach showed marginally shorter survival, possibly linked to increased comorbidities. These findings underscore the significance of tailored treatment strategies for older VS patients based on comprehensive clinical evidence, shaping future medical approaches in this demographic.
