Lifestyle Intervention for the Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes in women with Prior Gestational Diabetes: A Systematic Review and Meta‐analysis

Previous trials and even meta‐analyses have yielded conflicting results on whether lifestyle intervention (diet, physical activity) can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in women with prior gestational diabetes (GDM). Thus, we conducted an updated meta‐analysis to determine whether current evidence supports lifestyle intervention for T2DM prevention in women with previous GDM. Compared to standard care, lifestyle intervention yielded a 24% reduction in the incidence of T2DM. In addition, meta-regression analyses revealed no impact of duration of lifestyle intervention or baseline BMI on the observed reduction in incident T2DM. Importantly, this published literature shows evidence of publication bias on the funnel plot and the Egger Test. Current published evidence suggests that lifestyle intervention can reduce the risk of T2DM in women with prior GDM. However, this finding should be interpreted with caution in the presence of documented publication bias.
