Lithium is the only mood stabilizer proven effective for acute mania, depression, and relapse prevention in bipolar disorder. It also reduces suicidality and improves neurocognitive outcomes. Despite strong evidence, lithium prescriptions remain low, while antidepressant and antipsychotic use continues to rise. Recent data indicate no significant difference in mood episode recurrence between short-term and long-term antidepressant use, though evidence on depression-related hospitalizations remains limited. This trend raises concerns about optimal treatment strategies for bipolar disorder.
