Long-term aspartame and saccharin intakes are related to greater volumes of visceral, intermuscular, and subcutaneous adipose tissue: the CARDIA study

The study found that long-term consumption of artificial sweeteners (ArtSw) and diet beverages may contribute to increased accumulation of adipose tissue (fat) and a higher risk of obesity. The research, conducted on a cohort of 3088 adults over 25 years, found positive associations between the intake of aspartame, saccharin, and diet beverages with volumes of visceral, intermuscular, and subcutaneous fat. Additionally, these artificial sweeteners and diet drinks were linked to higher body mass index, body weight, waist circumference, and an increased risk of developing obesity.
