A recent Tasmanian Longitudinal Health Study (TAHS) aimed to understand the longitudinal phenotypes of asthma from childhood to middle age. The study identified five distinct asthma phenotypes: early-onset adolescent-remitting (40%), early-onset adult-remitting (11%), early-onset persistent (9%), late-onset remitting (13%), and late-onset persistent (27%). These phenotypes were associated with varying risks of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) at age 53, with late-onset persistent asthma showing the highest comorbidity rates, including mental health disorders and cardiovascular risk factors.
