Longitudinal Study Reveals Independent Role of Hippocampal Atrophy in Cognitive Decline

A Harvard Aging Brain Study involving 283 cognitively normal older adults over ten years sheds light on hippocampal volume (HV) atrophy as a distinctive contributor to cognitive decline. In comparison to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) biomarkers, HV changes demonstrated independent associations with cognitive decline, accounting for 10% of the variance. The findings suggest the potential role of non-AD pathologies in hippocampal-mediated cognitive decline, emphasizing the significance of serial HV measurements alongside AD-specific biomarkers for a comprehensive understanding of cognitive health.
