Long‐term surgical and functional outcomes after anterolateral thigh flap and free jejunal transfer reconstruction

This study compares surgical outcomes in patients with circumferential pharyngoesophageal defects undergoing reconstruction with anterolateral thigh (ALT) free flaps or free jejunal (FJ) transfer. ALT-free flaps had fewer total flap losses but higher stricture rates than FJ transfer. At the 5-year follow-up, ALT-free flap patients achieved better speech intelligibility. The choice of reconstruction method should consider surgeon expertise and patient-specific factors.
